iWrite – Living in Quarantine

Hello Friends!!

My name is Imara Moore and I’m a student editor for iUrban Teen. In my first post, I’d like to share how this COVID-19 pandemic has affected my life and my fellow peers.

Social distancing is very important during this time and we all need to stay safe but I can admit it’s been hard being away from my friends and others. I miss seeing everyone’s faces at school, practicing my sport everyday, and going out to eat at local restaurants.

I remember the last time I saw my friends, we all hugged and said our goodbyes because we had a feeling this would last a lot longer than a few weeks.

However, during quarantine, I’ve been finding new hobbies and staying active around the house. I’ve been keeping up with online school and have been trying to stay on top of my workout routine. As a dancer, I try to stay in shape as much as possible. It’s been nice relaxing and taking a break from everything in my life. Even sitting back and watching a good Netflix show has been the highlight of my week.

I also just started a new internship with iUrban Teen which is very exciting. I started this week and It’s been great. I learned how to moderate Zoom classes in a training on Friday and I’ve been doing that task for four days now. I also started writing for the iUrban Teen Newsletter and just being able to share my writing to others is really cool. I’m so glad to be a part of this and I’m thankful that I’m able to work during this difficult time.

I’ve learned a few things from being in quarantine and I thought I’d share.

In our everyday lives, we used to be so caught up in what was happening around us that we never paid attention or realized how important little things are. Once everything was closed, I realized I took a lot of things in my life for granted. From the bigger things like school, dancing, the mall, big events, and concerts to just going to the beach for a day or for a drive at night. Now that we’re isolated, I’ve learned to appreciate everything in my life because it could be gone just like that. Once quarantine is over, I know for sure I won’t complain for a long time.

Another thing I learned is that you can get A LOT right now.

Everyone (including me) used to make excuses for projects we needed to accomplish around the house or hobbies we’ve always wanted to do because of time. Now that we’ve spent months in quarantine, there’s no more excuses for procrastinating anymore. I’ve cleaned out my closet which I avoided for awhile and I’ve been redecorating my room. All the home projects I blew off because I didn’t have “time” or I was too “tired” are finally being done. Something else I’ve been doing is working on my goals. At first, I had the mindset of “How can I work on my goals if I’m in quarantine? It’s not like anything can happen, ” but then I had a change of thoughts. Of course the travel plans and social outings won’t happen currently but now we can plan for future trips and make more goals.. Working on business or college goals and personal goals are definitely a must right now. Although COVID-19 has taken many things away from us and we’re still in quarantine, there’s been a few positives that have helped this go by.

This time has helped all of us to be more in tune with ourselves and it helped give us hope, which is what we all need.
