STEM+Arts Career Profile – IMARA MOORE

IMARA MOORE

1.     Tell us about your role and what does it entail?

I am a graduating senior at Jefferson High School and I’ve been an intern for iUrban Teen since May 2020. I’m attending Howard University this fall and majoring in Journalism. I hope to become an editor or columnist at a high fashion magazine in the future and help make the fashion industry more inclusive for girls of color.

2.     What’s your background and how did it lead you to what you’re currently doing?

I’ve always liked to write poetry, essays, and stories in middle school. I got my first internship at KBOO Community Radio in 2019 and became the youngest lead newsroom intern. That internship helped me learn how to work in radio journalism. I also attended the University of Oregon Next Gen Journalism Camp where I learned interview and writing skills by college professors. In 2019, I was a part of the iUrban Teen iWrite camp which also gave me a lot of writing experience. That led me to my current internship at iUrban Teen and also helped me pursue my dream of journalism!

3.     What advice would you give our teens about, getting into your field of study?

I recommend landing a summer internship that’s focused on your intended major or something you’re very passionate about. I recommend applying for iUrban Teen & Summerworks internships (if you live in Oregon) . Spending the summer working for a company that is related to your major gives you so much experience and helps prepare you for your future. It will help you decide if that’s something you want to do for the rest of your life. Also, if you’re applying to college, the admissions committees like seeing how involved students are in their major so I really recommend landing an internship.

4.     What is the most fun thing about your work?

Being creative! Being able to write about anything and also interview people is such a fun thing to do. You can make any article your own and try to connect with the reader. My favorite part about working with iUrban Teen is how friendly everyone is. Anytime I have a question with anything, there are always people who will help me right away. Everyone is super friendly and it’s a great place to intern

5.     Did you have someone in your life growing up that provided you the support and inspiration?

My parents helped support me through the years by signing me up for programs and events. They helped pay for my education when I was younger and really helped me reach my goals. Also, teachers and instructors I had growing up helped motivate me. There’s a lot of different people who have inspired me.

6.     Can you share something about yourself that isn’t well known?

I run my own small magazine with my friend! It’s called “Gen-Blk Zine” (Genblkzine on Instagram) and it’s a fashion magazine for girls of color. We’ve made 4 issues and we’re currently selling our latest issue called, “Act my Age.” We feature interviews, articles, photography, and more from over 60 people around the world. I love editing and co-creating the magazines because I hope to work for a high-fashion magazine one day.

7.    Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much to iUrban Yeen especially Deena Pierott for being amazing! You have helped me so much and I’m so happy to be a part of this organization!
